Mr Andrew Carrothers
Consultant Trauma & Orthopaedic SurgeonAssistant Professor, University of Cambridge
Mr Carrothers specialises in orthopaedic medicolegal reporting for both personal injury and clinical negligence. He has a strong track record of expert witness work in these areas. He is instructed both by Claimant’s Solicitors (~60%) and Defendant’s Solicitors (~30%) and occasionally as a joint expert witness (~10%).
Mr Carrothers works alongside some of the UK’s leading solicitors. This includes all solicitors within band 1 & 2 of chambers.com. Mr Carrothers writes reports on all aspects of general orthopaedic trauma surgery but has a specialist interest in complex lower limb trauma surgery and pelvic & acetabular fractures, in addition to hip and knee replacement surgeries. This fits with his NHS practice, which deals almost exclusively with complex orthopaedic trauma and complex hip and knee replacement surgery.
Mr Carrothers is normally able to examine a client within 2 weeks from receiving the instructions with medical records and is able to return a completed high quality, evidence-based report normally within 4 weeks from examining the client.
Where clients do not need to be examined, e.g. for liability assessment in clinical negligence claims, the report can be returned normally within 4 weeks from receiving instructions and all relevant documentation.
Mr Carrothers is a trauma and orthopaedic surgeon working in a Major Trauma Centre and dealing with patients suffering major injuries as part of his routine day-to-day work. He has lectured nationally and internationally and run courses on the management of orthopaedic trauma and has been principal and chief investigators on national and international trials in the field of orthopaedic trauma. He also has his own sub-specialist areas of interest where he has a national and international reputation. He is an International Faculty member for AO.
In addition, he is a Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon in the Royal Army Medical Corps (V), having served in both Iraq and Afghanistan, allowing extensive exposure to and management of high energy ballistic and blunt polytrauma.
Mr Carrothers is willing to accept UK-wide instructions. His main consultation rooms are in Cambridge but he can use consultation rooms in other cities as needed. He is fluent in English only, but familiar with working through translators as needed. He does not accept instructions for Legal Aid work, criminal cases and public and media relations, nor does he prepare reports on whiplash, spinal injuries or back pain.
Trauma:
- Fractures, particularly complex fractures of the acetabulum and the pelvis
- Injuries caused by major trauma
- Multiple fractures
- Long bone fractures
- Femur, tibia, fractures
- Hip, Knee and Ankle joint injuries
- Open fractures
- Massive endoprosthetic replacement of the bone
- Amputations for trauma
Elective surgery:
- Hip and Knee Joint replacement
- Revision hip and knee arthroplasty and associated periprosthetic fracture surgery
- Complications of hip and knee replacement including fracture
- Knee and ankle arthroscopy
Since qualifying and being appointed as a Consultant in 2012, pelvic & acetabular trauma and lower limb reconstruction surgery has been his main interest. He has a specialist interest in polytraumatic injuries. This fits with his NHS practice, which deals almost exclusively with complex orthopaedic trauma and complex hip and knee replacement operations.
In addition, he is a Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon in the Royal Army Medical Corps (V), having served in both Iraq and Afghanistan, allowing extensive exposure to and management of high energy ballistic and blunt polytrauma.
He is an International Faculty member for AO.
Knee: He has a wide experience in elective knee surgery including uni-compartmental, total knee replacement and knee revision arthroplasty. He also regularly performs knee arthroscopy (including meniscal repair, meniscectomy, chondroplasty and microfracture).
Hip: He has also developed considerable experience in elective hip surgery including hip replacement, hip revision surgery and peri-prosthetic fracture surgery. In addition, he is leading a UK NHS NIHR RCT in the management of complex hip/acetabulum fractures, including his published ‘fix & replace’ surgical concept.
