As the end of the year approaches, we’re pausing to look back on the milestones and achievements for Carrothers Orthopaedics over the last 12 months before turning our attention to the year to come.
Certificate of Excellence
This has been a great year for us and our patients and we are particularly proud of the fact that we have retained our Certificate of Excellence on the independent patient review site, Iwantgreatcare.org. The site provides an open forum for patients of all healthcare providers to review their experience and rate the care they have received. It provides real time objective feedback, allowing prospective patients to make an informed assessment of potential healthcare providers. Our aim is always to achieve the best possible outcomes for our patients which is why maintaining our poll position comes at the top of our list of achievements for this year.
Among the recently posted patient comments was this one, dated 1 November 2023, from a private patient at Nuffield Hospital Cambridge:
“Having been under the care of many different consultants in the past, I can honestly say Mr Carrothers genuinely cared, was happy to answer any questions and was open and honest. He listened every step of the way and not once came across as sanctimonious or unapproachable. Mako joint replacements
Carrothers Orthopaedics has now performed close to 700 Mako joint replacement surgeries, including total hip replacements, total knee replacements and partial knee replacements.
This leading-edge technology, which includes an advanced computer software package that enables surgeons to pre-plan joint replacements with absolute precision and a robotic arm that is used by the surgeon on the operating table, has improved outcomes for patients including reducing pain and improving function of the new joint. One of the reasons that Mako delivers superior results compared to conventional joint replacement surgery is that the prosthetic implants used are more accurately templated and aligned to the patient’s pre-diseased joint biomechanics (bespoke implantation), because of the detailed pre-operative planning, using CT scans of the patient’s own unique anatomy. This leads to better comfort and performance of the replacement joint. Patients also spend less time on the operating table which supports faster recovery times and less soft tissue and ligament damage.
In 2024, Andrew Carrothers will continue to be one of the pioneers of the latest Mako Knee 2.0 software and we are looking forward to improving surgical outcomes still further for our patients. He is keen to share his knowledge and offers lectures and theatre visits to a range of colleagues, including GPs, physiotherapists, chiropractors and osteopaths.
Assistant Professor University of Cambridge
This year, as in 2022, Andrew Carrothers has been helping to train the next generation of UK NHS doctors and orthopaedic surgeons in his role as Assistant Professor at the University of Cambridge. At Addenbrookes Hospital, since 2012, he has both mentored and trained senior pelvic & acetabular fellows who subsequently become UK consultants in this highly specialised field.

Expert panels
Mr Carrothers sits on the BHS RHCC expert panel which looked at the development of a new Revision Hip Complexity Classification. Their work was published in Bone Jt Open. 2022;3(5):423-431
Presentations
At the British Hip Society Annual Congress 2023 in Edinburgh, Mr Carrothers was part of a team presenting on Simultaneous Fracture Fixation and Hip Replacement for Acetabular Fractures with “A Fix & Replace Construct” in Older Patients. It covered clinical and radiographic results with a minimum of one-year follow-up. The full team was Nelson Bua, Simon Hislop, Joseph Alsousou, Daud Chou, Jaikirty Rawal, Peter Hull, Andrew Carrothers.
Orthopaedic courses and conferences
Mr Carrothers also participated in the BOOS/NCRI Metastatic Bone Clinical Leaders Group Meeting in Birmingham in April and the British Hip Society Annual Congress 2023 in Edinburgh in March.
