More than a million Mako procedures have been performed to date in around 35 countries worldwide. In the 17 years since robotic-arm assisted surgery was first introduced, the technology has gone from strength-to-strength, as growing numbers of orthopaedic surgeons have invested in Mako to improve outcomes for patients. There have been more than 330 published, peer-reviewed studies into the effectiveness of Mako and to date the Mako Insightful Data Analytics database contains over a million patient records.
Andrew Carrothers is one of the orthopaedic surgeons to have embraced Mako technology for joint replacements. Since Carrothers Orthopaedics introduced the Mako system in 2018, he has carried out almost 700 Mako procedures.
So, what is it that makes this such an important advance for joint replacement surgery?
Mako technology
Mako SmartRobotics combine three key features:
- Pre-operative planning using 3D virtual models of the patient’s unique joint anatomy created from CT scans. This helps the surgeon to devise a detailed, individualised plan of the procedure before the patient reaches the operating theatre.
- AccuStop haptic technology which helps to improve precision during the surgical procedure itself. Studies have shown this technology supports more pristine bone resections, less soft tissue damage and greater bone preservation when compared to manual cutting blocks.
- Insightful data analytics which enables the surgeon to track certain performance indicators, including any complications or readmissions, as well as capturing patient-reported outcomes. This information helps to track patient progress and enables surgeons to strive for continuous improvement.
Supporting the surgeon’s skill and judgment
Mako features a state-of-the-art robotic arm which is used by the consultant during surgery to guide the procedure and help them to remain within the precise boundaries established by the pre-operative plan. However, the surgeon can assess soft tissue laxities and adjust the placement of implants to achieve the final position before making cuts, so Mako supports rather than replaces the surgeon’s expert judgment.
Making a difference to patients
But, while Mako’s innovative technology may be impressive, it is the difference it makes to patients, both on the operating table and afterwards, that is the most important benefit. Mako allows for more minimally-invasive surgery so patients spend less time on the operating table and typically recover faster. Patients who undergo Mako surgery report lower pain scores than those who have conventional surgery, when surveyed after six months. Mako protects soft tissues and ligaments from potential damage, according to clinical studies and Mako patients surveyed six months after surgery report better patient satisfaction scores compared to those who have conventional joint replacement surgery.
The fact that Mako pre-operative planning is so precise means the joint implant is more accurately aligned. This leads to better performance, greater comfort and less soft tissue and ligament damage. More healthy bone is preserved which is an important advantage if revision surgery is needed in the future.
