With the end of the year fast approaching, it is our custom to pause to say a few ‘thank yous’, to look back over the last 12 months and to share what’s coming up next year.

1000 Mako robotic arm assisted joint replacement procedures
Andrew Carrothers is one of the orthopaedic consultants who has pioneered the use of Mako robotic-arm assisted joint replacements since its inception nearly 20 years ago. This year we passed a significant milestone, with the completion of our 1000th Mako procedure. The Mako system was developed by Stryker and includes software that creates a virtual 3D model of the patient’s unique anatomy using CT scans and a state-of-the art robotic arm used to support the surgeon in the operating theatre. We are delighted to be at the forefront of this new technology which is helping to improve outcomes for patients and enhance the skill and precision of orthopaedic surgeons.
Sharing our Mako skill and expertise
Alongside delivering Mako joint replacement surgery, Andrew Carrothers shares his skill and insights by teaching the Mako system to fellow surgeons. In June 2025, he attended the Stryker European Joint Reconstruction Summit in Amsterdam.
AceFIT-G research
Last year, we reported on our involvement in the Acetabular Fractures in older patients Intervention Trial (AceFIT), which is a feasibility triple-arm randomised controlled study into acetabular fractures in older patients that published its findings in The Bone and Joint Journal. Our involvement in AceFIT continued in 2025 and we are now a co-applicant in the AceFIT-G research which is an older patients’ global intervention trial. We are looking forward to updating you on progress with the trial this time next year, alongside details of what’s happening regarding our involvement with the NIHR Health Technology Assessment and the NIHR James Lind Alliance Priority Setting Partnerships Rolling Call.
Committee involvement
Andrew Carrothers was pleased to sit on various committees this year, including the UK BAPAS (British Association of Pelvic & Acetabular Surgery) Consensus Group and the Orthopaedic Lead Medical Advisory Committee at Nuffield Cambridge Hospital.
A message to our patients
As we prepare to sign off for this year, we would like to return to our patients and offer a message of support and encouragement.
If you have undergone surgery or non-surgical treatment this year, we hope you are making a good recovery and are starting to be able to enjoy greater movement and mobility again. Please do stick with your rehabilitation programme as it makes all the difference to your outcome. And, of course, if you’re unsure about anything do get in contact.
If you’re yet to have treatment, we recommend doing whatever you can to optimise your health and wellbeing in the run-up to surgery, including eating a nutritious diet and doing gentle exercise when you can. Again, do get in touch if you need any information.
