Season’s greetings from the team at Carrothers Orthopaedics and we hope you have a happy and healthy new year.
Thank you
We greatly appreciate all of your support and feedback this year, particularly the many heart-warming reviews you have left for us on the iwantgreatcare.org website. There is nothing more satisfying for us as a team to hear at first-hand how people have benefited from our expertise and we value every piece of feedback. Of course, it is also helpful for prospective patients to read about the experience of others, so on behalf of ourselves and the people who might use these reviews, thank you for taking the trouble to share your feedback and we look forward to hearing from more our patients in 2024.
Exceeding expectations
You may have read our 2023 review of the year but if not, do take a look as it is a quick summary of all the amazing things that have been happening this year. We won’t repeat everything here, but we did just want to say how pleased we are to be nearing our 700th Mako joint replacement procedure. When this technology was first introduced in 2006, we were excited at its potential to improve outcomes for patients. However, the reality has exceeded anything we could have imagined. Mako is an invaluable system that helps to improve surgical precision. Being able to create a detailed pre-surgical plan of the patient’s unique anatomy allows us to place the prosthetic implants with greater accuracy than ever before and this, in turn, improves comfort and performance. Patients often have faster recovery times and experience less soft tissue and ligament damage, so overall there is a lower reported risk of complications. Mako software and robotic arm technology continued to improve year-on-year and in 2024 we will be one of the pioneers continuing to lead the introduction of the new Mako Knee 2.0 software. If you’re not familiar with Mako, take a look at our blogs which outline some of the features and benefits. Or make contact and we’d be happy to explain in a bit more detail.
Take care of yourselves
As we come more fully into Winter, it can be a difficult time for people who have debilitating conditions like osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. If you are waiting for joint replacement surgery, or even if you have mild arthritis that doesn’t require surgery, symptoms like stiffness and joint pain may worsen in cold, damp weather (although, conversely, the Winter weather can lead to an easing of symptoms for some people). Low pressure, strong winds and high humidity certainly seem to be particularly challenging for people with arthritis, according to a study[1] by the University of Manchester in association with Versus Arthritis.
If you’re experiencing joint pain and stiffness this Winter, do what you can to stay warm, including wearing the right clothing and sturdy footwear that can help prevent falls. Getting enough Vitamin D is important for bone health but, as it comes primarily from sunlight, many people in the Northern Hemisphere can be deficient during the Winter months. A supplement of 10 micrograms a day during Autumn and Winter is recommended. You can read more Winter wellness tips in our blog.
Wherever you are, we hope the festive season is a time of peace and nurture for you when you can find the time to look after yourself and look after your joints. On behalf of everyone at Carrothers Orthopaedics, enjoy the holidays and we look forward to seeing you again in 2024.
